The Toronto International Film Festival has become one of the biggest players on the festival circuit, with international premieres and star-studded red carpets drawing cinephiles and journalists from around the world.

Horror fans also know that its Midnight Madness lineup is on par with some of the best genre festivals out there. This year is no different, with directors like Sion Sono ("Suicide Club," "Cold Fish") and Lucky McKee ("The Woman") showing off new features. The gem in the 2013 Midnight Madness crown, however, is "Hostel" director Eli Roth's new film, "The Green Inferno."

Roth's latest is inspired by infamous gorefests like "Cannibal Holocaust" and "Cannibal Ferox," as well as less likely sources like today's Internet-based political activism.

The director explained to IGN that "The Green Inferno" is about students who go to the Amazon and "chain themselves to trees and protest and stream it and hash-tag, and it works. It actually shuts down the operation. Then on their way home, their plane crashes. And the very people they save are like, 'Ah, food -- that's great!' It's like a free lunch, and they are brought back into the fold of absolutely barbaric, primitive man -- people that have had no contact with the outside world."

'Green Inferno' Still

"The Green Inferno" was actually shot on location in the Amazon. "We scouted in the summertime and went up the river for hours and hours and found this village where there was no electricity, no running water, grass huts," Roth revealed.

Will Roth and his crew's sweat and blood please diehard horror fans, or will they get eaten alive? We'll have to wait until this September to find out.
